Era thokku or Prawn Masala, Kerala style

Today as I was reading through Victoria Osteen’s blog….. Oh wait! For those who do not know, Vic Osteen – She pastors at the Lakewood church USA along with her husband, Joel Osteen. And, Joel is the most watched inspirational figure in America. I am a big big fan of this awesome lady.

She had shared something very important in her recent post, which spoke to me. It might have a message to you too!

It’s sort of like using one of those GPS systems in your car. You set the location to where you want to go, and the GPS calculates the best route. You can be driving along and get distracted and completely miss the street where the GPS instructed you to turn, but that doesn’t mean you’ll never reach your destination. You wouldn’t just pull off to the side of the road crying and say, “Now I’m stuck here. I’ll never get where I need to go all because I missed my turn!” No, there’s always another way to get there. In fact, that GPS system will instantly recalculate the route to your destination based on your present location.

Well, God works in a similar way. He is constantly giving us direction, speaking to our hearts, leading us by granting peace or unrest in our spirits. But even when we miss His instructions—and we all do from time to time—He will recalculate our route and get us back where we need to be.

God will get you back on track toward the wonderful destiny He has prepared for you!

And here comes the delish of the day. Era thokku / Prawn Masala. The flavor infused in this curry is just awesome. You will enjoy as you cook it. A no-fuss, no-grind, easy-to-do recipe.

Curd rice, era thokku and few mango slices… Bliss… Mouth-watering…


A step by step tutorial here…


1) Clean the prawn well and drain the excess water in a strainer.



1) Heat oil in a heavy bottomed pan. Once the oil is hot, add the green chillies, ginger garlic paste and curry leaves. Saute them until the raw smell of the paste goes off.


2) Add the onions and fry them in a medium flame until golden brown. It took me 10 minutes because the oil was less, having absorbed by the ginger garlic paste.


3) Add chilly powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, saute for next one minute in medium flame.


4) Add the tomatoes, few salt, cook them covered in slow flame for the next 5 minutes. Keep stirring regulary to ensure that there is no burns.


5) Add the prawns, give a nice stir so that it is fully coated with the masala. Check for salt and add if required.


6) Prawns release lot of water. Cook them covered for the next ten minutes in medium flame with regular stirring in between.


7) Check if the prawn is cooked and add few tbspn of water if you want the dish in a pouring consistency. I did not add water. Allow the prawn masala to cook for another 1 minute and switch off the flame.


My notes:

1) Coconut oil can be replaced by the regular oil that you use in your kitchen.
However, coconut oil gives a unique flavor.
2) Fresh ginger garlic paste is preferred over store-bought ones.
3) This can be served with rotis, rice, curd rice.
